Greg Gowen

Greg Gowen is a metal sculpture artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Art is a natural expression of who he is as a person. An innovator, a designer, and a renovator with a whimsical streak, Greg is always dreaming big and thinking outside of the box. Working predominantly in copper and steel, Greg’s work is characterized by vibrant colors and layered textures inspired by the surrounding high desert and mountains. Each piece he creates is a masterful fusion of materials and techniques that bring out the natural beauty of the metals.

LIFE:

Greg had the perfect childhood riding dirt bikes and skiing the bumps in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Growing up, he watched his parents launch their art careers. His mother, Martha Gowen, was a talented batik and watercolor artist, and his father, Mike Gowen, was a copper and brass sculpture artist. As a young teenager, Greg swore he would not follow in his parent’s footsteps and become an artist; but at 18, he realized that art was what he was uniquely designed to do.

Metalwork became the ideal canvas for Greg’s imaginations. His dad gave him the skills and technique to build his ideas, and his mom showed him how to make them beautiful. His work was first displayed in street fairs, exhibitions, and at his parents' gallery in Old Town, Albuquerque. Greg gained recognition quickly, and was soon showcased in galleries throughout the southwest.

In 1987, Greg’s life was transformed by God through His Son, Jesus Christ. The flame ignited by the Holy Spirit is still burning bright in him today.

In 1994, Deborah walked into his life. Not only was she beautiful, but she also shared his love for God. Deborah has been the biggest supporter and advocate for Greg over the years, in his life and work. Greg and Deborah’s four children (Jordan, Kyle, Wesley, and Noah) along with their five grandchildren provide continual inspiration, motivation and joy to Greg’s life.

These days, Greg spends most of his time making art at his Albuquerque studio. The high desert and rugged mountains that surround Greg's studio seep into his work, infusing each piece with the characteristic beauty of nature. Over the years, Greg has enlisted the help of fellow artists Stephen Maresco, Jennifer Sabatka, Deven Stearley, and other helping hands to see his creations come to life. But the business is still very much a family affair. His son Noah can be found creating in the studio and running around the country doing art shows. His son Wesley manages financial planning for the business. Deborah manages the family gallery, "Galleria Tamaya," located at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort on the Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico.

Greg’s son, Kyle has continued the tradition and started his own artist studio - H&K Studios in Colorado Springs CO. Kyle and his wife, Hayley, create beautiful metal wall hangings, ornaments, and magnets.
